Academic Bowl Season Summary

The academic bowl team traveled to Port Byron for their regional post-season matches.
Erie defeated Riverdale 130-120 in the quarterfinal round. They advanced to the semi-finals, playing second-seeded AlWood (Woodhull). They lost 94-68, ending their season with a 13-16 record.
"The scores do not reflect just how close these matches were," Coach Orman said. "The questions were tough for us but considering the players we'll have back next year, I know we'll be tough contenders in the next couple of years."
Sophomore Matt Swanson led the team in toss-ups with seven; sophomore Jes Sasko had four, and junior Sam Berk and sophomore Joe Bright each had one.
Swanson also led the team for the year in toss-ups with a total of 52. Bright and Sasko each had 45.
Sasko and Bright earned TRAC-8 All-Conference honors, as well. All-Conference is earned by leading in conference toss-ups during the regular season and tournament; the top 10 players with the highest totals are selected. Sasko had 28 conference toss-ups and Bright had 25. Swanson just missed it with 19. He did, however, earn All-Tournament honors at the Kewanee Wethersfield tournament in November after correctly answering 18 toss-ups during the one-day tourney.
"These sophomores really stepped it up for us this year," Orman said. "They came up with a lot of answers you wouldn't expect for underclassmen. I'm proud of their efforts and all the players in our program. We've managed to upset a few teams that weren't expecting it this year."
To conclude the season officially, the team is planning an academic "bowl"ing party later this month.
