It has recently come to our attention that a student within our conference was diagnosed with MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus). MRSA is referred to as Community Acquired MRSA when it is occurs outside the healthcare setting, and most often is seen as a skin infection that resembles a pimple or boil accompanied by red streaking. There have NOT been any reported cases in our district or co-op, but due to the serious nature of this type of infection we are informing parents and students.
MRSA is transmitted via direct skin contact or contact with an infected surface. In the school setting it is most often acquired via contact while playing sports or in locker rooms. Therefore we have posted "MRSA Prevention Guidelines" in all school locker rooms. The best way to prevent MRSA is through good hand washing or use of an alcohol based hand sanitizer. Athletes should also shower after practice and games. It is also important to wash uniforms, practice clothes, sports towels and equipment, and don't share these items. When participating in sports you should cover any cuts or abrasions with a dressing that is taped on all four sides. The two links provided below will direct you to the CDC's web page, which has detailed information regarding Community Acquired MRSA , we encourage you to check it out. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at 659-2239 EXT.2525.
