1A Learns About Plants

During the month of September, students in Mrs. Holland’s first grade class have been learning about plants. Students learned about the different parts of a plant, the special job that each part does, and what a plant needs in order to survive.
1A students conducted an experiment and made predictions about whether or not a plant could survive without water. We have been watching each day as our plant receiving water thrives and our plant not receiving water SLOWLY dies. We have decided that geraniums are very hardy plants because it has been 15 days and the plant with no water still looks very healthy.
As a class, we also planted lima bean seeds and have been observing the different stages of plant growth. Students were very enthused as their seeds began to sprout.
Finally, to demonstrate to students the importance of the stem, we placed daisies in water dyed with food coloring. We watched each day as the white petals slowly turned color. Students learned that the stem’s job is to suck up water and nutrients to the leaves and flower. The stem is like a straw.
