Recommendations for head lice

1. Student demonstrating symptoms such as itching be checked by school nurse.
a. Daily head checks are not necessary. To immediately exclude that child from school cannot be justified from either a medical, nursing or social perspective, and send a negative message to the child.
2. If live lice are found and student has not been treated with 7-10 days (according to the recommended retreatment on label).
a. Parents will be called and student will be sent home with information sheet about proper treatment & cleaning. If a student has been treated within 7 days, they will remain in school. (Nurses will remove lice if only 1 or 2 are seen).
b. If nits only are found, a student will remain in school, but a note and/or phone call will be done per school nurse.
3. Student will be rechecked immediately upon return to school to make sure treatment was done and again 1 week later to make sure no increase of lice or nits are noted.
4. If a student has live lice, their siblings, classmates, or others who may have had direct head to head contact will be screened. Classroom head checks will be determined per school nurses.
