Elementary Counselor: 40 Developmental Assets

BE AN ASSET BUILDER!!

by Matt Beck

August 05, 2009

“FILLING OUR BUCKETS WITH THE 40 ASSETS”

A goal coordinated by all Erie district school counselors is to increase awareness to students, staff, community members, and parents about the 40 Developmental Assets. The 40 Development Assets from The Search Institute are basic life skills that are critical building blocks for children’s successful growth, development, and independent living inside and outside of school. The more assets we can help to build in our children, the less likely he or she is to make unhealthy decisions.

To help build assets at Erie Elementary, all elementary students began the school year by reading the book, “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” This delightful book encourages positive behavior as children see how easy and rewarding it is to fill other “buckets” with supportive deeds-kindness, appreciation, caring, and being good individuals. Everyone carries an invisible bucket! Students are learning the concepts of bucket filling or bucket dipping in guidance lessons throughout the school year. It is very exciting how easily students understand this life-changing message.
