Developmental Classroom Guidance
by Matt Beck
August 05, 2009
Classroom guidance is an integral part of the Erie Elementary Counseling Program. All students receive one 30 minute lesson weekly dealing with topics such as: respecting self and others, conflict resolution, anger management, character education, violence prevention/bullying, substance abuse, study skills, motivation, etc. All classroom programs will be developmentally appropriate for each grade level and will support the learning standards set by the State of Illinois, Erie Community School District #1, and aligned with the American School Counselor Association guidelines. Lessons are geared to one of the three domains for classroom guidance: Academic Development, Career Development, and Personal/Social Development. Please look for and ask about what your child has learned in their guidance lessons.
In addition to Erie Developmental
Guidance Curriculum, Second Step & Steps to Respect, two
researched based violence and bullying prevention programs, will be
implemented into the elementary guidance curriculum this school
year. Conscious Discipline, an emotional and social program
that focuses on conflict resolution, creating a peaceful school
family, and self-control, will also be integrated into the
curriculum. Students will receive skill building lessons about
conflict resolution, developing empathy, safe ways to handle a
bully, and much more. More information will be forthcoming
throughout the school year about this enriching program.
Furthermore, my intent is to have the guidance lesson curriculum
“language” incorporated into daily instruction by classroom
teachers.
