“Respect the Beat”
Come hear the world music drumming ensemble keep the beat alive in the hallways at Erie Elementary School. Respect the Beat is a collaborative intervention that combines the creative energies of world music drumming and effective school counseling practices. A unique convergence occurs when we bring the attitudes, skills, beliefs of school counseling into a drum circle. The drum circle becomes an intervention designed to help students learn about effective communication, encouraging responsibility, stress management, diversity, and student resiliency.
Respect the Beat has been incorporated in the developmental guidance curriculum and in small group settings through creating a drum circle that teaches respectful behavior, listening skills, focus skills, goal setting, friendship skills, and peer refusal skills that are intrinsic to circle drumming. Stay tuned for more exciting news as Respect the Beat becomes an integral part of “who and what” our students are at Erie Elementary School.
