Preparing for Your Academic Life after Erie High School

SPECIAL NOTES:

Dual Enrollment:

Earning College Credits while still in High School

Beginning with the spring semester (January – May 2010), Black Hawk College will offer courses on the Erie High School Campus, allowing our students to enroll in college-credit courses while still at Erie High School. Dual credit will be given for these courses, meaning the student can use the courses both to meet graduation requirements at EHS and to build college credits at Black Hawk Community College.

Enrollment will be offered to Senior students and to Juniors. Students must meet enrollment qualifications for Black Hawk including but not limited to placement/ COMPASS test results and/or prerequisites for BHC courses.

At this time, the plan for Spring 2010 is to offer two course: Speech 101 (Tuesdays and Thursdays) and Art 100: Art Appreciation (Mondays and Wednesdays) beginning January 19.  Each course is a three-semester hour course. Classes will meet from 7:25 to 8:46 a.m. in a classroom at Erie High School. The class first day is the same as BHC's first day (January 19th), and the last day is the day before BHC finals starts (May 12th).

Using this schedule, students would be done in time to make their regular second period class. Those who choose to take both classes will be able to do so, and those who select only one will be assigned to a study session during the regular Period 1 time slot on days when their class does not meet.

Students and their parents will be expected to pay for the cost of enrollment. Fall 2009 rates are $90 per credit or a total of $270 per course plus books and will be similar for Spring 2010. Books will be the responsibility of the students/parent who can work with the College directly on book purchase and buy-back OR may buy through the G.O. (but still sell back directly to the college). High school students do not qualify for financial aid. If a program for reimbursement or cost-sharing becomes available, all enrolled students will be notified.

Contact the G.O. for more information.
